Cooking the Whole Foods Way: Your Complete, Everyday Guide to Healthy, Delicious Eating With 500 Recipes, Menus, Techniques, Meal Planning, Buying Tips, Wit and Wisdom
ASIN: 1557882622

Customer's Rating: 4
Summary: Good whole foods cookbook
Comments: This cookbook is the solution for those "health-seekers" who want to eat by the rules (more fiber, more whole grains, less refined sugar, more vegetables). Many of the recipes are delicious, and it's nice to make something that tastes good but that won't give you pangs of food-guilt later.
A few caveats: 1. This is not a pure vegetarian cookbook. She has a whole section on fish. The author does not eat fish herself, but wanted to more fully represent the macrobiotic philosophy. 2. This doesn't give a good look at the full spectrum of macrobiotics. I'm not an expert by any stretch, but from what I've read of some of the other macrobiotics founders, this seemed very incomplete. She seems to concentrate primarily on the yin-yang principle (in her next book she talks about the elements), but doesn't give a comprehensive overview of how those can affect certain conditions. Also, as another reviewer pointed out, she includes a lot of ingredients most macrobiotics shun (chocolate, garlic, etc.) She seems to bend the rules a lot when it comes to desserts. 3. Having said that, when the author thinks a rule is important, she runs with it. Don't even think of eating raw vegetables or fruits, any white flour, or certain vegetables, like tomatoes.
All in all, I thought this cookbook was a valuable addition to my collection, but I didn't think it was a very good lifestyle guideline.
The Weekly Feeder : A Revolutionary Shopping, Cooking and Meal Planning System
ASIN: 1892016095

Customer's Rating: 3
Summary: Good layout, but 30-40-30 breakdown not suitable for us.
Comments: I gave this both 3 stars because while it is laid out well, it doesn't suit my family's style of eating. The "system" it employs is probably already used by many homemakers - don't expect anything outstanding despite the "revolutionary" title. It's simply planning dinners ahead, taking the recipes to find the quantities needed, making your shopping list from there, and keeping copies of them, so they can be reused. A common sense approach.
The book heavily favors pasta combinations with some potato, rice and breads. Don't expect much brown rice, barley, millet, or other whole grains here. Of the meats, chicken features the most. There are no vegetarian entrees, and no nutritional information or exchanges. There is a rough proportional break down, but since they more or less follow a 30% protein, 40% carbs, 30% fat scheme, I didn't find it suitable for our eating style. We don't do high protein diets and we have vegetarians in the family. It would have been nicer in a binder style format so after you started making up your own menus you could add them to the ones already in the book so you could have them all in one place.
For those who DO follow a rough 30-40-30 scheme, there is good news: The side of the book has marks so you can quickly turn to any week's menu plans. There are tear-out grocery sheet checklists in the back of the book if you follow the menus exactly. The recipes themselves appear tasty, but since I returned my copy I can't say for sure how they'd turn out. With 8 weeks of dinner menus, it could save you some time and hassles if these menus do suit your style. There is a small dessert chapter for treats. There are charts in back for you to Xerox in making up your own menus. The homey sidebars provide tidbit info in a sort of fun way. The bottom margins are roomy enough for some notes, and there are several lined pages in back for expanded notes.
Basically, the book's usefulness will largely depend on your current eating habits more than the layout. The layout was actually one of the better ones I've seen. Those looking for more "menu oriented" cookbooks might want to look at the "Month of Meals" series by the American Diabetes Association even if you are not diabetic. The "mix and match" layout might be more useful even if it does not provide custom grocery lists like this one does. For the vegetarians, the _Month of Meals: Vegetarian Pleasures_ edition would be particularly helpful.

The Diabetes Carbohydrate and Fat Gram Guide : Quick, Easy Meal Planning Using Carbohydrate and Fat Gram Counts
ASIN: 1580400507

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Excellent source for information
Comments: My daughter got diabetes at 8 months and I was clueless. She is 2 now and is wanting to eat more like everyone else. This book arms me with information to make good decisions for her. She is so small that just a few undosed carbs can really move her blood glucose high. It is a little frustrating at first until you get a feel for what foods are found where. Not all foods are in here, but what book can hope to list everything. If you are going to just buy one book or if this is your first carb book, this is the one to get.
Diabetes Meal Planning Made Easy : How to Put the Food Pyramid to Work for Your Busy Lifestyle
ASIN: 1580400523

Customer's Rating: 3
Summary: Overdose on carbohydrates...
Comments: Oh what is a person to do. One the one, hand we are offered diets high in protein that cause weight loss but taken to an extreme (devoid of carbohydrates) can injure the body. On the other hand, we have DIABETES MEAL PLANNING MADE EASY by Hope S. Warshaw that suggests we overdose on carbohydrates. In the end, each of us must decide individually which plan works best.
I am using the INSULIN RESISTANCE DIET by Hart and Grossman to help me get my life in order, i.e. get my insulin regulated. The "weak" spells and almost fainting from hunger syndrome I used to have when I ate less protein (as advocated by Warshaw) are gone. On the other hand, I am not on the high protein diet advocated by some. I am losing weight and regaining the spring I used to have in my step (it's easier when you weigh less). When I lay on my side, I have to use a pillow to support my arm since the cutaneous layer around my middle no longer is large enough to serve this purpose.
Whereas Ms. Warshaw considers carbohydrates the most important food group (placing them at the bottom of her food pyramid with 6+ servings a day), Hart and Grossman place water at their base with 8+ servings a day. Next come vegetables on both pyramids, but Warshaw links vegetables (3-5 servings) and fruits (2-4 servings), whereas Hart and Grossman show only vegetables (unlimited servings but at least 3 per day). At the next level, Warshaw shows milk (2-3 servings) and meat, cheese, fish combined (2-3 servings), compared with Hart and Grossman's "high protein foods (eight servings a day including 2-5 servings of dairy products). At level 4, in case you've been counting, Warshaw shows fats, sweets, and alcohol with NO servings. Level 4 for Hart and Grossman is high carbohydrate foods with the restriction "Eat no more than two servings at any one time. Be sure to eat at least two servings of fruit daily." Fats and oils are the 5th level for Hart and Grossman with the words "keep to a minimum" and "include some good fats in liquid vegetable form." There is no fifth dimension for Ms. Warshaw's diet.
Hart and Grossman say their approach works for diabetics, as well as pre-diabetics and I have found this to be true for me. I am not about to go back on a high carbohydrate diet for anyone, not even the ADA. Maybe, just maybe, the high carbohydrate approach does not work for all women. A key aspect of Hart and Grossman is not only more protein, but a concept they call "linking" where one never eats a carbohydrate without a protein of greater value. Also, drinking lots of water and limiting carbohydrates to 30 grams per two-hour period is helpful.
Hart and Grossman cover research extant at the time they wrote their book (2001) and Warshaw's book reflects the thinking of the ADA extant at the time she published her book (2000). Hart and Grossman have been conducting clinical trials and base their results on their own experiences with clients as well as much scholarly work. The bottom line is if you have diabetes or think you're in the zone, you'll have to do some experimenting. What works for one person may not work for another. As for me, I'm going with Hart and Grossman, because it works.
