The Protein Power Lifeplan ASIN: 0446678678
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Despite bad advice on the sun, a good plan.
Comments: Another strong argument from the Eades pair on the insulin-lowering (and consequent benefits to the immune and other systems) effects of a low-carb diet rich in antioxidants and omega 6 fats... or, "natural" eating. If you follow this plan to the letter, you will lose weight (as you will with any calorie reduction combined with increased exercise) and enjoy great health benefits. The Paleolithic argument... well, they can get a little wacky romanticizing it. Exercises like "Defending the Camp?" "Bringing Home the Buffalo?" Am I the only one who found this hilarious? And then they warn against working out to the point of exhaustion. Yes, I'm sure our ancestors were careful to take it easy in their daily struggle to survive. Sometimes you can fall a little too in love with your own great idea (we are still Paleolithic humans) and get a little binary on it (everything paleolithic: good. agricultural: bad). My biggest argument with the book is the authors' advocating lots of sun exposure (without burning, though)... I think they should make some sort of acknowledgement to the modern problem of depleted ozone layer and increased UVB/UVA radiation. I agree that at one time the sun provided merely benefits, but we've changed that, haven't we? Just as we haven't evolved to benefit from the Twinkie, we haven't evolved to reap only good things from today's sun. Just ask seasoned construction workers, who only in the past decade have begun burning. Scary. So, Drs. Eades: please be careful what you tell people regarding the sun. It ain't what it used to be.

Protein Power: The High-Protein/Low Carbohydrate Way to Lose Weight, Feel Fit, and Boost Your Health-in Just Weeks! ASIN: 0553574752
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: For $5.59 You Can Possess a Miracle!
Comments: I started this diet eight days ago, October 26, 1998. Today it is November 3, and I have lost 8 pounds. I feel wonderful. I have no cravings (including for beer, which I LOVE -- major carbo), sleep like a baby, and my body already is taking on hints of the shape it had when I was in college. One of the main reasons I am writing this is because I do not want the review written by "A Reader from Austin TX (Oct 26)" to be the highest-tiered review on this site -- this person, unfortunately for him or her, is confused and I think has not carefully read the book nor applied its principles. I hope s/he will go back and reread it. This book does not advocate the reckless consumption of fatty red meat and eggs -- it says one can do this within reason. Same with protein -- it is an "adequate protein" diet (I do think it's unfortunate that they titled the book "Protein Power" -- I hesitated buying the book for that reason, thinking it would advocate eating too much protein). The book does NOT advocate an anaerobic workout, either -- it emphasizes weight lifting, yes, but the authors say, "...aerobic exercise is good(p.196)...make your [weight lifting] workouts aerobic so you get benefit of both weight training and endurance exercise. You do this by not slowing down between sets"(p.198). Friend, read the book and try the diet for two weeks before you condemn the program. You'll be converted. As an example of what I have been eating on this program (I hate to call it a diet, as painless as it is): Breakfast: raspberry or strawberry fruit smoothy -- satisfies my sweet tooth for the rest of the day
Lunch: egg salad (the book's recipe is great) on whole wheat tortilla
Dinner:anything that doesn't send me over my carb limit for the day
Snacks: veggies, string cheese
Is it tough steering clear of carbs? You betcha. Is is worth it? You better believe it, and after a 3-5 day adjustment period you'll not miss them, and you'll feel better than you ever had. Give this diet an honest shot and you'll be sold.

The High Protein Cookbook ASIN: 0609806734
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Order this book for the recipes, not the high protein diet
Comments: I am not a fan of very high-protein diets, but this book is great. The cover says the recipes are quick, easy, and delicious. They really are! They are inventive, use generally available ingredients, and draw from a range of cuisines. I am an attorney who commutes over 2 hours a day, so I am tired when I get home and I just want to eat. As long as I have the meat called for in the recipes thawed and ready to go, I am eating a great-tasting dinner in 30 minutes or less. Add a salad and a side vegetable and you are all set. Sometimes the fat content is a little high, but you can generally work around that. Also, the dessert recipes rely on aspartame, which I don't consume now that Splenda is available in the U.S., but you can make substitutions. Very minor problems, in my book. Highly recommended for anyone who eats meat and wants a quick, easy, and interesting dinner.

The Complete Book of High-Protein Baking ASIN: 034524186X
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: The Complete Book of High-Protein Baking
Comments: This book is based on the principles of Diet For A Small Planet.Simply put, I used the recipes in 1979 while working at a Utah ski resort, named Alta, where I was able to serve 200 some guests(breakfast, lunch and dinner)healthy, tasty, high in nutrition baked goods. Not only did the foods go fast but I was also told that energy was higher. Which at a ski resort is good for the thing that your there for, skiing, hiking etc...The one great use of the book is the ability it teaches in that you are never limited in the amounts or variety of ingredients to use as long as you keep to a few formulas.
