The Herbfarm Cookbook: A Guide to the Vivid Flavors of Fresh Herbs ASIN: 0684839768
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: An essential reference
Comments: Jerry Traunfeld has given us an excellent guide to growing, handling, and cooking with fresh herbs and edible flowers. He offers familiar as well as novel recipes that are simple yet far from boring. He also includes attractive full-color photos of finished dishes and botanical watercolors of herbs as well as a helpful glossary. In sum, this is a valuable and well-researched book from an enthusiastic chef who shares his knowledge and experience in a sincere and straightforward manner. "The Herbfarm Cookbook" sits next to another great favorite of mine, Sonia Uvezian's "Recipes and Remembrances from an Eastern Mediterranean Kitchen," a brilliant and highly original volume featuring fascinating text and exceptional recipes that make imaginative use of herbs (and spices). Both Traunfeld and Uvezian write remarkably clear recipes that even beginners can follow without difficulty. Every lover of good food should acquire these two books, which are certain to become classics.

A Spoonful of Ginger : Irresistible Health-Giving Recipes from Asian Kitchens ASIN: 0375400362
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Gingerlicious!
Comments: So far, the recipes I've prepared from this book have garnered nothing but raves. Many of the recipes are simple enough to prepare for weeknights, using few ingredients but very fresh ones. The result is fabulous flavor that you just can't get from your local takeout joint. The section about home remedies is really neat (I have yet to use the hangover helper recipe, but I'm sure it will come in handy one day). I got this and Ming Tsai's "Blue Ginger" cookbook around the same time. I've barely cracked open Ming's book-the recipes are gorgeous but mostly inaccessible. If you are a newcomer to Asian cooking, I think "Spoonful of Ginger" is a delicious introduction.

Classic Indian Cooking ASIN: 0688037216
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Amazing...
Comments: This book was ranked among the top-six all-time cooking bibles by the New York Times. The moghul cuisine recipes are clear and detailed, without being "too-detailed". Julie Sahni uses her amazing knowledge of combining spices to make the dishes taste extraordinary. One of the sections is devoted to basic cooking techniques, concepts and description of Indian spices. Recipedelights.com recommends this book to the cooking experts as well as the beginners.

Your Backyard Herb Garden: A Gardener's Guide to Growing over 50 Herbs Plus How to Use Them in Cooking, Crafts, Companion Planting and More ASIN: 0875969941
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: good start
Comments: A good book for (mainly) culinary herbs and how to recognize them, but thin on information about medicinal use, and lacking in too many delicious plants that really ought to be mentioned. Great starter book for someone getting into growing their own herb garden though. I thoroughly enjoy it.

A Busy Cook's Guide to Spices: How to Introduce New Flavors to Everyday Meals ASIN: 0970428502
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: A Breath of Fresh Air
Comments: Not your typical cookbook with pictures and recipes, this is more of a quick reference. You can look up ideas, recipes and seasoning matches organized by what you have on hand in the cupboards. Lots of interesting folklore (for when you have more time to read). Tips for matching wine and beer with food and seasonings. Very unique info that is not easily found.

In the French Kitchen Garden: The Joys of Cultivating a Potager ASIN: B00006JO20
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Great Illustrtations and Explanations
Comments: My wonderful husband just bought this for me for my birthday and my thumbs are glowing green. (Oh, to be an Alaskan and have a gardening book bestowed up on me in the dead of winter!) The author explains many ideas for gardening in great detail, often explaining what could happen if you do things different ways (for instance, what happens when radishes are grown in hot soil in warm climates vs. in cooler ones.) The illustrations are also efficient in that they are in water colour and show detail where needed and show adequate lay-out.
