Living Yoga - Back Care Yoga for Beginners ASIN: 0945671636
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Solid everyday workout for back care
Comments: I bought this video a month ago and have done it every morning for three weeks. The effects haven't been as dramatic as some reviewers have described, since I have a very severe back problem, but nevertheless it has been very helpful, hence me continuing to do it every morning. I especially find that after doing the workout, I maintain correct posture quite naturally and the hip opening exercises really help with decreasing my pain. Another good aspect of the video is it's length, 20 minutes is not too long for me to have time to do it every morning, and then I reserve the weekends for longer yoga workouts. Another aspect of doing a workout like this for back pain is that it balances and boosts mood, helping with the depression that is so often accompanied with chronic pain. I would reccommend this video to anyone that is getting frustrated with traditional physical therapy not working, especially if done in paralell with a back-safe workout like swimming.

Stott Pilates - Ultimate Back Care ASIN: B000054OW7
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Ultimate backcare review
Comments: I have lived with fairly mild lower back pain most of my adult life. It has consisted of morning stiffness and mild discomfort after engaging in activities such as gardening. For many years, I found that a few yoga stretches and postures pretty much took care of it. But upon entering my forties, the stretches and postures, while still helpful, did not seem to have the same effect and the pain started to intrude into other activities such as skiing and biking. Since these were sacred activities - to be protected at all costs - I had to find something else but nothing seemed to be enough. About six months ago, I discovered some pilates exercises in a magazine. Finally, I began to experience significant relief! I then found some pilates classes at my gym and it became clear to me that I needed to do this on a more regular basis. I bought the Living Arts Pilates tape and worked up to the Intermediate Mat Workout doing it several times a week. I not only received considerable relief from back pain but felt all over better and not to be dismissed, experienced a flatter abdomen. I felt better (younger) doing the activies I love such as biking. I started looking at amazon.com for other pilates tapes. I felt that a change in tapes might be interesting plus I felt like the Living Arts tapes really did not focus on technique. When I saw the Stotts Ultimate Backcare, it seemed like a natural choice. I also bought Stotts Essential Mat Workout at the same time. I was hopeful that the Ultimate Backcare would concentrate on the place I needed the most help and would offer modifications to some basic pilates exercises that might be more appropriate to someone with a "bad back". (I found modifications nearly non-existant in Ana Cabin's Living Arts Pilates tape). The Ultimate Backcare tape brings to it Moira Stott-Merrithew's intelligent approach to exercise and her considerable experience. It provides a good introduction to basic pilates principles with her usual extensive focus on breathing and form. (I have discovered breathing and form to be very important in the achievement of maximal results). Moira has a student demonstrate the exercises while she explains and emphasizes the important points. She clearly shows the correct and incorrect forms. The tape begins with the introduction (you can skip this after one to two viewings), and proceeds to a gentle warm-up, a very basic set of pilates exercises with modifications and finishes with a couple of stretches. It runs about 45 minutes. She offers warnings, when necessary, before starting an exercise to those with disc problems, etc and offers further modifications. I am glad that I purchased the Essential Mat Workout for Beginners at the same time as I much prefer it. I find the Essential Mat Workout a little more challenging and I definitely can see the results in stronger "core muscles" which is the heart of pilates practice. But I think for those with recent back injuries or back problems that have made them reluctant to exercise, Utimate Backcare is perfect. Her methods seem very safe and sound. I think that these individuals will find it very helpful in relieving back pain and creating the stronger core muscles to support a more active lifestyle. But don't be afraid to move up to the Essential Workout tape for Beginners when you have gotten very comfortable with this one. You can still use the modifications when necessary and may experience greater results.

Karen Voight - Pilates - Abdominals and Back ASIN: B00005K22Y
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: A great effort!
Comments: This tape is 43 minutes long. It starts with an 8 minute stretch, goes on to 30 minutes of pilates like ab work, and ends in a relaxing and thourough 5 minute stretch. As always, Voight's instruction is clear and friendly without being TOO friendly, if you know what I mean. I consider it an intermediate level tape although I still do it and I have been doing pilates for years because I just like Karen. You will gain core strength and flexibilty from this tape and it leaves you feeling nice and refreshed! You can't go wrong.

Yoga for a Strong and Healthy Back ASIN: B00005K9PP
Customer's Rating: 3 Summary: A very easy beginning
Comments: This video features two short (25-min.) yoga sessions, the second one a little more challenging than the first. The exercises are nice and the instruction simple and easy to follow. I did not end up using this video very much, though, because I found it to be much too easy. It'll provide a relaxing stretch, but not really a workout for the back (or the rest of your body).

Lower Back Repairkit ASIN: 6303413226
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Excellent aid for an aching back and spine
Comments: This video has two lessons to relax your aching back. Lesson one has stay-on-your-back type excercises. Lesson two has you doing some Cobra-pose type exercises. Priscilla Patrick encourages you in both to do the exercises to the extent you can and is always mindful that you do have a sore or painful back. Her tone is soothing, her pace is relaxed and the time goes by quickly. You will feel a difference even if you only do the first lesson. There are no flashy introductions, beautiful sets, mood music or fancy costumes. Get ready to work with her a few seconds into the tape. It helped my back the first time I tried it. With your doctor's OK, it might do the same for you.

Joanie Greggains: Back Health ASIN: 6301913736
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: I love this video!
Comments: I have used Joanie Greggains Back Health for several years. I'm afraid that I'm wearing it out and that it will just quit one day so I need to get a back-up replacement, just in case. It's safe and effective and I never get bored, it's just the right length for me.

FitBall - Back To Functional Movement ASIN: 0964534169
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: FitBall-Back to Functional Movement
Comments: What an excellent video. In a short period of time you have been able to combine stretching, cardiovascular and strengthening exercises for your back. Your teaching approach is excellent and there is a nice balance between basic and advanced exercises throughout the video. I highly recommend this video for people interested in not only rehabilitating their low back but also for people who want to maintain their healthy back.

Weight Watchers Easy Shape-Up: Healthy Back and Waist Workout ASIN: 6302640342
Customer's Rating: 3 Summary: More of a cardio routine than an ab-back workout
Comments: This is a good video for those who are beginners or are getting back into a fitness routine. The instructor, Kathe, walks you through each new move and gives excellent cues throughout. There are three levels of difficulty/intensity shown; beginner through advanced. I am in my early twenties, in okay shape, and found the intermediate level to be very good for a moderate workout. The focus of the video is on the cardio. There is a 5-10 minute segment on back and ab work. This section is not as good because the illustration of the form isn't clear...I stressed my neck muscles with many of the ab moves. I would recommend another video for the ab work. Other than that, the segment is a light workout. The tone of the video is late eighties, with somewhat cheesy moves. With the exception of the ab segment, this is a good video for beginners. Some prior aerobic experience will help get the moves faster, but definitely not necessary.

(37) Marlon Braccia: Yoga Therapy: Relax Your Back (Part 1 of a 2 part series) ASIN: B00005M085
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Gentle, relaxing, healing
Comments: are three words that I would use describe this video. With this video and the gentle guided movements I was able to heal a severely pulled muscles in my back and leg. As with all exercises, discuss with a practictioner. I found Marlon's presentation to be easy to understand. She guides the user through a posture check at the beginning of the tape, and reminds you to breathe throughout this video. I wasn't sure if it would help, but I now am thankful to Marlon and yoga for this healing. This video also provides a great stretch of the lower back and sacrum, even if you don't have injuries. I like to use it before retiring for the evening since I feel so relaxed when I am finished.

Abs, Back and Buns ASIN: B000066RH7
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Not long enough!
Comments: This video is 23 minutes long and uses a fitness ball and a medicine ball to work your core muscles. I just started using the fitness ball, but I could follow rather easily, even though there is a limited amount of instruction on how to use the ball. None of the moves are very complicated and Pam explains how you can adjust them to your abilities. I think this is a great ab workout video to use when you don't have much time, or to use in conjunction with a cardio workout since it does not really get your heart rate up. My only complaint is that it is too short! At the end of the video it seemed like we had just started and I was left wanting more to do.
