Body Learning: An Introduction to the Alexander Technique ASIN: 0805042067
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: for beginners and advanced
Comments: I find myself referring to this book again and again. I always recommend it as an introduction to the Alexander technique. It assisted me greatly when I was first taking Alexander lessons. It is still valuable years later as I refresh and review. Easy to read, entertaining, cogent, and reflective. It reads almost as though you were having conversation with Mr. Gelb. If I had to use one book to introduce a new person to the Alexander technique, theory and understanding, this would be the one.

The Alexander Technique: The Essential Writings of F. Matthias Alexander ASIN: 0818405066
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Good introduction to the writings of F. M. Alexander
Comments: Several years ago I discovered the Alexander Technique, found a teacher, and got rid of my chronic back pain. The man who dseveloped the Technique, F.M. Alexander, always seemed a mystery to me, particularly after I tried reading his books. This book is an edited version of Alexander's writing that makes them a lot easier to read. It also has a very informative introduction that puts Alexander and his Technique in historical perspective. I'd suggest this book primarily for people who have some familiarity with the Technique. For a good short introduction I'd get Fitness Without Stress by Robert Rickover.

Fitness Without Stress: A Guide to the Alexander Technique ASIN: 0943920329
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Excellent introduction to the Alexander Technique.
Comments: This is the book to read first if you don't know anything about F.M. Alexander and the Alexander Technique. And if you DO know something of the Technique, it's a great book to give to friends or relatives who are curious about it. My 85 year-old grandmother read it and said, "That's the first time I understood why you're taking lessons." (That after almost a year of trying to explain it to her myself!)

The Alexander Technique Manual: A Step-By-Step Guide to Improve Breathing, Posture and Well-Being ASIN: 1885203381
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Excellent introduction to the Alexander Technique
Comments: This is a great book for anyone who has heard about the many benefits of the Alexander Technique and would like to find out what it is. The Alexander Technique is often described in very mysterious terms when, in fact, it's quite a simple and practical process. And a very powerful process of self-transformation. Brennan's book is particularly valuable for the newcommer because of its great photographs. They say a picture is worth a thousand words and this is certainly true for explaining the ideas of the Alexander Technique. The book also shows how the Alexander Technique can help with various specific activities. It also has some very interesting case histories. If you have an interest in learning more about the Alexander Technique, I'd get this book. Two other good introductions are "Body Learning" by Michael Gelb and "Fitness Without Stress - A Guide to the Alexander Technique" by Robert Rickover.

A New Approach to the Alexander Technique: Moving Toward a More Balanced Expression of the Whole Self ASIN: 0895949180
Customer's Rating: 2 Summary: A VERY mixed bag
Comments: Glenn Park is an experienced teacher of the Alexander Technique, with much to say on the subject. To this extent the book might be useful to students of the Technique. BUT, the Technique is consistently subordinated to the whole gamut of New Age (rhymes with sewage) enthusiasms. We got Auras, we got Chakras, we got hundredth monkeys, we got 'energy' in every imaginable (but not verifiable) form. Park actually includes F.M. Alexander's horoscope! An experienced student of the Technique, equipped with a wheelbarrow of large grains of salt, will find helpful information on the Technique, IF they can dig it out of the dreck.

Thinking Aloud: Talks on Teaching the Alexander Technique ASIN: 0964435209
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: A book full of wisdom and common sense about the Technique.
Comments: This is my very favourite Alexander Technique book--I refer back to it over and over again! Thinking Aloud captures Walter Carrington's intelligent charm. Walter's many years of teaching the Technique and personal relationship with the late F.M. Alexander have given him a wealth of information and experience which he shares in own wonderfully unique style.

Your Guide to the Alexander Technique ASIN: 0312064942
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: A solid introduction to the Alexander Technique.
Comments: I've read a dozen or so books about the Technique over the past dozen years. I became interested in the ideas behind the Technique after having had lessons with 2 very different Alexander Techers. Both teachers helped me a great deal with a chronic back pain problem I'd had since my twenties (I'm 67 now.) My first teacher was very non-verbal, but his hands-on-guidance was very clear and was able to change my posture quite a bit. My second teacher was far more verbal, and also had very good direction in her hands. She encouraged me to do some reading, starting with "Fitness Without Stress"(my favorite) and then "Body Learning"" and most recently the Authorized summaries of Alexander's own four books(most of these you can get from Amazon - but the authorized summaries you have to get by mail from an Alexander Technique Professional Society - you can find out more at the Alexander Technique Bookstore at alexandertechnique.com/books)My sense is that Gray's book is not as clear as the other books's on the Technique I've read, although it does cover the basics.

The Undivided Self: Alexander Technique and the Control of Stress ASIN: 1556432941
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: an Alexander book for doctors and psychologists
Comments: Where F. M. Alexander's own writings read almost like philosophy, Dimon's book is more grounded, with the feel of a psychology textbook. It's a distinctly objective approach, an argument for the Technique with the logical impact of a medical journal. Cautious or skeptical people who hear the success stories of others who have overcome physical problems with the Alexander Technique say, "OK, so what is the technique? How does it work?" It can be hard to get a straight answer - it's a complicated issue, and in any event the only way to really understand the Technique is to experience it for yourself with a teacher. If an intellectual introduction is what you're after, though, and if your approach to this sort of thing is more empirical, this is the book for you.

The Alexander Technique: How to Use Your Body Without Stress ASIN: 0892813857
Customer's Rating: 3 Summary: Scientific, yet wanting in certain areas
Comments: This is a very interesting read on the benefits of the Technique, but it doesn't describe the Technique itself as in-depth as it could. For instance, Mr. Barlow consistently refers to Alexander's fundamental principle ("Use affects functioning.") to describe causes of various maladies, but he leaves the reader somewhat lost as to the steps to improve one's use. His insights into the causes of disease and malfunction, however, are definitely worth the read.
